Finding those tracks
December 2003
Northwest Runner

While running on the roads is preferred by most of us, many runners enjoy taking a few laps on a local track. The advantages of tracks are many; they include accurate distances, reliable safe footing, and better security on dark nights than on the roads or through the woods. Some even offer lighting!

Finding a convenient and usable track can be a challenge, and reader/runner Darcy Whaley came across an Internet link, give below, which shows all the stadiums used for HS football in the Puget Sound area. Most have tracks, parking and even facilities, so this list is good place to start. In most cases, you can use them anytime they are empty, booking for larger group workouts is a little trickier, but can usually be arranged.

Darcy report that these stadiums definitely have a track:
Auburn
Bellevue
Federal Way
French Field (Kent)
Highline
Ingraham (book through Seattle Parks: 206-684-4077)
Lake Washington
Lincoln Bowl (Tacoma)
Nathan Hale (book through Seattle Parks: 206-684-4077)
Newport (Bellevue)
Pop Keeney (Bothell)
Rainier Beach (book through Seattle Parks: 206-684-4077)
Shoreline
Sparks (Puyallup)
Spartan (Sumner)
Stadium Bowl (Tacoma)
West Seattle (book through Seattle Parks: 206-684-4077)

This list and the website are good places to start to build a list of running tracks in the entire state. We welcome more input.
